چکیده
Background: Endotracheal intubation (EI) is a critical life-saving procedure commonly performed on emergency department (ED) patients who present with altered mental status (AMS). Aims: We aimed to investigate the safety of observing, without EI, ED decreased levels consciousness (LOC). Methods: reviewed data all adult Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score ≤ 8, during period between 2012 and 2018, in an academic tertiary care centre. Trauma were excluded. The divided into two groups for comparison: those intubated not. Data mortality, morbidity, baseline clinical characteristics collected analysed. Results: After screening 6334 electronic medical records presenting LOC, only 257 met inclusion criteria. 173 (67.3%) intubated, while 84 (32.7%) Among patients, 165 (95.4%) early (within hours presentation). Mortality, morbidity length stay group higher, although same. Conclusion: It might be safe observe non-trauma GCS 8 intubation. However, such decision should taken carefully, as delayed can associated higher mortality

Surgical treatment of acute subdural hematomas in patients with low Glasgow Coma Scale scores.
Difficulties in treating subjects with acute subdural hematomas and low Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores (5 or less) were studied in 30 patients using two different surgical treatments. The outcomes in these patients were good for 13% poor for 23% and fatal for 63%. The ICP was well controlled in 2 patients (12%) in the DH (decompressive hemicraniectomy) group. No patient was well controlled in ...

متن کاملHeart rate variability for assessing comatose patients with different Glasgow Coma Scale scores.
OBJECTIVE To assess the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in coma by heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS Sixteen comatose patients and 22 normal subjects with comparable ages and genders were studied. Patients were classified in two subgroups according to the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). Time, frequency, and informational HRV domain indices were calculated. RESULTS A notable reduction of HRV wa...
متن کاملWhat does ultrasonography miss in blunt trauma patients with a low Glasgow Coma Score (GCS)?
BACKGROUND The role of ultrasound (US) as a screening tool for the evaluation of blunt abdominal trauma is still controversial. Determining the types of missed injuries and the accuracy of US in patients with a low GCS will improve the evaluation of these blunt trauma patients. METHODS Prospectively collected data from the trauma registry of a Level I trauma center was reviewed. RESULTS 7,9...
